Born in Gazeley in Q1-1898 [Newmarket 3b:512], baptised in Gazeley All Saints on 24th April 1898, son of Mark and Florence Ann COCKERTON
(née GOULT) of Lidgate Road, Dalham.
1901 census...Mark [3] was at Lidgate Road, Dalham, with his father Mark [40] a farm labourer; his mother Florence [39]; brothers Elijah [14], a labourer, and Frank [9], and his sisters Ellen [12]; Violet [6] and Amelia [5 months]. The whole family were born in Gazeley. 1911 census...Mark [13] was now a farm labourer, still in Dalham with his parents, brother Frank and sister Amelia. |

The battalion were part of 165th Brigade, 55th West Lancashire Division and at the time of Mark's death there was no particular battle in progress, although
surrounded on three sides and under constant artillery fire. They were employed mostly in working parties, digging new, or repairing old trenches. This did not
mean they were safe from enemy artillery and bullets. |
